His recordings of Brahms with Szell, and Beethoven's Triple Concerto with Karajan, Richter, and Rostropovich are particularly famous. He had already made two mono session recordings of Brahms' Violin Concerto on other labels, so this 1960 recording is his third. The 1969 recording with Szell, in particular, reigns supreme in Japan as a masterpiece due to its tension and unparalleled collaboration, and has been reissued many times, including on SACD. On the other hand, this collaboration with Klemperer has been overshadowed, and has been reissued infrequently since the CD era. However, even setting aside the fact that this 1960 recording features the French National Radio Orchestra, which Klemperer specifically invited as a guest performer, it is not only difficult to say which is better, but in some ways it surpasses the Szell recording, thanks to Oistrakh's lively violin playing, the more relaxed and open performance compared to the Szell recording, and the superb recording quality at the Salle Wagram. I am particularly surprised by the expansiveness, beautiful tone, and gentle bowing of Oistrakh's violin in this SACD release. In addition, the coupling includes the 1958 Sargent recording, which is certainly less well-known (generally speaking) than the Karajan recording. This recording is also superb in both performance and sound quality.
