A — D
Archive Grade A term used by Press-1 to describe items in 新品未開封 (New & Unopened) condition. These are factory-sealed specimens intended for serious preservation and long-term investment.
Blu-spec CD / Blu-spec CD2 A high-fidelity CD format developed by Sony Music Entertainment Japan. It uses the same high-precision blue laser technology used to manufacture Blu-ray discs to cut the "pits" on the CD.
-
The Benefit: Reduces "jitter" (timing errors), resulting in a more focused soundstage and clearer instrumental separation.
DSD (Direct Stream Digital) A high-resolution digital audio format that captures the sound wave with incredible frequency.
-
The Benefit: DSD is widely considered the most "analog-sounding" digital format. When a Japanese release features a "DSD Flat Transfer," it means the music was moved from the original master tapes to digital with zero filtering or EQ adjustments.
F — K
First Press (初回盤 - しょかいばん) The very first batch of a record or CD produced from the original stampers or masters.
-
The Benefit: Collectors prize First Pressings because the metal "stampers" used to press the vinyl or discs are at their sharpest, providing the most detailed sound possible.
HQCD (Hi-Quality CD). Similar to SHM-CD, this format uses high-transparency polycarbonate and a special alloy for the disc's reflective layer.
-
The Benefit: Improved data reading and compatibility with all standard CD players.
K2 / K2HD Mastering: A legendary mastering technology developed by JVC (Victor Entertainment). It uses a proprietary algorithm to restore high-frequency harmonics often lost during digital conversion.
-
The Benefit: It provides a "smooth" and "musical" texture that removes the "harshness" often associated with digital audio.
L — O
Limited Edition (完全生産限定盤 - かんぜんせいさんげんていばん) A release that is produced in a strictly fixed quantity. Once the original stock is sold out in Japan, it is rarely repressed in the same format. These are the primary focus of Press-1.
Mini-LP Replica (紙ジャケ - かみじゃけ) A CD packaged in a cardboard sleeve that perfectly replicates the original 12-inch vinyl artwork, including the inner sleeves, gatefolds, and inserts, scaled down to 5 inches.
Obi Strip (帯 - おび) The iconic paper sash found on the spine of Japanese media. While originally for Japanese translations, it is now the essential "seal of authenticity" for collectors. A pristine Obi significantly increases the resale value of a title.
S — Z
SACD (Super Audio CD) A high-resolution disc that can hold significantly more data than a standard CD.
-
The Benefit: Offers "Master Quality" sound. Many Japanese SACDs are "Single Layer," meaning they are optimized specifically for high-end SACD players for maximum sonic purity.
SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) A format that uses a high-transparency polycarbonate plastic (the same material used for LCD screens).
-
The Benefit: It allows the player's laser to read the pits on the disc with much higher precision, leading to a "clearer" and more "transparent" sound.
Virgin Vinyl Records pressed using 100% new, un-recycled plastic.
-
The Benefit: Recycled vinyl often contains impurities that cause surface noise (clicks and pops). Virgin vinyl provides a "dead silent" background, allowing the music to emerge from total silence.
