In 2026, the global project "COLTRANE 100" was launched to commemorate the 100th anniversary of John Coltrane's birth. At its core, the previously unreleased live recordings "The Tyvelly Tapes," long spoken of as a "legend," will finally be officially released. Recorded in clubs in New York and Philadelphia between 1961 and 1965, these recordings are a valuable record capturing a period when Coltrane's music was constantly evolving.
The recordings were made by saxophonist Frank Tyvelly. Deeply impressed by Coltrane's performances in the clubs, he brought his own equipment and continued to record Coltrane's performances. These tapes were long known only to a select few as "hidden recordings," and have attracted great interest as a document that offers a glimpse into Coltrane's performances and thought process during his prime.
This release, "The Tyvelly Tapes - Introduction," is a pre-release featuring two previously unreleased performances from these recordings, and is a special project that will be released only on CD in Japan. Unlike studio recordings, the more free and expansive performances in the club setting get to the heart of Coltrane's improvisational expression.
<Personnel>
John Coltrane (ts, ss),
McCoy Tyner (p),
Steve Davis (b),
Pete LaRoca (ds)
