Tower Records x Sony Classical Ultimate SA-CD Hybrid Collection, 12th Release:

Rubinstein's unprecedented Beethoven, to which he poured his heart and soul in the final stages of his life.

Of the three complete recordings of Beethoven's piano concertos left by Arthur Rubinstein (1887-1982), this collaboration with Daniel Barenboim and the London Philharmonic Orchestra has been particularly popular in Japan since its release. Recorded in 1975, the maestro, then 88 years old, delivers a vibrant and magnificent performance that is one of the miracles humanity has achieved. From the refreshing and charming No. 1 and No. 2, to the deepened No. 3, the lyrical No. 4, and the regal No. 5, he vividly portrays the character of each work, proudly singing the brilliance of the composer's noble spirit contained within each. Barenboim's creation of a rich and profound orchestral sound is also magnificent. The sound, crafted by renowned British engineer Kenneth Wilkinson at Kingsway Hall, perfectly captures the performance's charm. Piano Sonata No. 18, recorded in April 1976, was Rubinstein's last solo session recording. This is a new DSD remaster from the original analog master. While previous BMG CDs and other remasters of the concertos were remixed from multi-masters, this time a stereo master (remixed by the original engineer Wilkinson himself), which appears not to have been used before, is employed. In particular, the richness and brilliance of Rubinstein's piano playing are enhanced in the Fourth and the Emperor Concerto, reviving the image of this performance from the analog era.
