This masterpiece of Brahms, a collaboration between Gilels, Jochum, and the Berlin Philharmonic, has been reissued in high quality!
Using the original master tapes, it is reproduced in the best possible form. This is its first SA-CD release.

This Gilels recording has long been recognized as a more masculine and powerful performance than any other Brahms piano concerto performance in the world. Especially in the First Concerto, the robust structure of Brahms's music, the solid support of Jochum, and the Berlin Philharmonic—a prime example of the luxurious, pyramidal German sound of the Karajan era—confront Gilels' grand piano playing in a powerful performance. On the other hand, some may have found it difficult to approach due to its lack of gentle expressiveness and flexibility. However, listening to this reissue will reveal that this was largely due to previous mastering and recording quality issues. Especially in the SA-CD format, the nuances of Gilels' keystrokes and the degree of on/off transitions, Jochum's delicate and perfect instructions, and the balance and resolution with the orchestra are heard with greater clarity than before, completely changing one's perception of the performance. You will realize that this performance was a rare masterpiece, where strength and weakness, boldness and delicacy coexist. With the latest high-quality digitalization, you will be able to appreciate the performance even more than before. The DG recordings from the 1970s are also superb, and the slightly closer recording style enhances the sense of presence, making it truly impressive to hear with greater detail. In addition, this coupling also includes two Brahms solo works recorded in Finland in 1975. A total of four pieces are contained on two discs.
For this series, we used high-quality digital sources from the original analog master tapes in the home country, and dedicated engineers there meticulously mastered the recordings specifically for this series. A key point regarding this release is the significant advancements in the restoration process itself, including digitization and mastering, over the past few years. Digital technology is constantly improving, making it possible to produce higher-quality and more nuanced sound sources. Now, more than ever, you can enjoy the original analog masters in superior sound quality. This SACD project has made it possible to release these recordings with superb sound. The SACD layer offers a highly detailed master sound. The CD layer has also undergone the latest digitization and mastering, setting it apart from previous releases in terms of sound quality.
Furthermore, this series features the original jacket design, and the liner notes include a new introductory essay by Mr. Matsuoka. This second installment of the "Vintage SA-CD Collection" will release a total of three titles.
