This LP release features a picture disc of Yo-Yo Ma's first recording of Bach's unaccompanied cello works, a brilliant performance by a young Yo-
Yo Ma. Yo-Yo Ma, considered one of the greatest cellists of our time, has recorded Bach's unaccompanied cello works three times, a work often referred to as the "Old Testament" of cello performances. This release is his first recording, made in his mid-twenties, and commemorates the 40th anniversary of its initial release in 1983.
It also includes new liner notes by producer Richard Einhorn,
who also worked on Gould's Goldberg Variations (1981).
Yo-Yo once stated in an interview that he practiced two measures of the piece daily from the age of four, under the guidance of his musician father, and that it remains a very important piece that he still plays every morning. This first recording brought him his first Grammy Award. The 3-LP set features picture discs with excerpts from the autograph scores of all six pieces printed on both sides. This product, manufactured overseas (both disc and jacket are made in the EU), will be imported as is, and released as a Japanese edition with Japanese liner notes and an obi strip (the remastering used for the simultaneously released hybrid disc will not be applied to the cutting process).
